Jailed child molester has dark history
A MAN jailed in 2008 for possessing thousands of child pornography images was yesterday convicted of molesting his friend's daughter.
A seven-man, five-woman jury returned a guilty verdict in the second day of the man's trial.
He had earlier pleaded not guilty to the single charge of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 12.
During proceedings in the Warwick District Court this week it was heard the young girl was visiting the man's home last year when he slid his hands under her underpants and indecently touched her.
The jury was shown pre-recorded evidence from the girl, in which she describes the moment the man hugged her from behind before molesting her.
She said she crossed her legs when the man had touched her and that was the only occasion anything like that had happened.
Family members of the girl took the stand today, telling the court the girl reported the abuse and then asked "Am I very brave for telling you?"
The jury retired to consider its verdict just after midday yesterday and later asked to see the video evidence again.
A verdict was then reached within 10 minutes.
The man, who was supported in court by his brother, appeared emotionless as the verdict was read out.
Crown Prosecutor Nicholas McGhee said the offence was "brazen" and the man had shown no remorse.
"There was, to some extent, an abuse of trust because she was a regular visitor to his home," he said.
Mr McGhee also told the court the man was jailed for possessing child pornography and using a carriage service to access child pornography in 2008.
The former resident of the Warwick area was found with 3800 images and nine videos, some of which were of the most serious child abuse category.
Judge Douglas McGill yesterday sentenced the man to 18 months jail and decided against setting a parole eligibility date.
"I suspect that is likely theoretical and you will likely have to serve the entire sentence," he said.
