Officers punched and spat at in Chillingham

TWO policemen were hospitalised after they were punched and spat at during an incident at Chillingham, just west of Murwillumbah, on Sunday afternoon.

About 2.30pm yesterday, police from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command were called to a home in Zara Rd, following reports of a concern for welfare.

When police attempted to speak with a 22-year-old man in the home, he allegedly became aggressive towards another occupant in the house before attacking the two officers.

During the struggle, the man is alleged to have punched and spat at police.

He was arrested a short time later and taken into custody.

Two male officers - a senior constable and a constable - were taken to the Tweed Hospital for treatment.

The senior constable was treated for a neck injury and the constable for an injury to his hand.

Both were later released following treatment.

The 22-year-old man was also taken to the hospital, with charges expected to be laid upon his release.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page on https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/
