Old motorbikes on show and road

THERE might just be a ‘World’s Fastest Indian’ in the collection of Coffs Harbour’s dedicated motorcycle restorers, who live by the motto “keep your motor running”.

The Coffs Harbour & District Motorcycle Restorers’ Club members will celebrate their pride and joy with a national rally and ride this weekend. It is expected to attract more than 100 classic, vintage and veteran motorcycles.

Club members joke, “there’s plenty of classic, vintage and veteran riders” who come with the bikes and the club was formed to maintain a knowledge and understanding of old motorcycles and has grown to about 60 members.

And it’s a shared passion – restoring and riding some of the world’s greatest old and treasured motorcycles.

Ned O’Brien, 83, joined the restorers’ club in 1982 and many of his mates are also members.

He bought his first bike, a second-hand 1936 600c Ariel Square Four, during World War Two.

“For me now, riding a bike is easier than driving a car,” Ned said.

“The hardest thing to do with motorcycles is wheeling them in and out of the garage.”

In his youth, he rode many a road trip from Maroubra to Yamba.

“They were good trips back then; the dirt road started at Newcastle and went all the way to Yamba.

“I’ve had many bikes and many mates over the years.”

Another of his bikes, a 1955 BMW R-50, a 500cc twin cylinder dream machine, has chalked up 350,000 miles, which in today’s metric terms is well over half a million kilometres, 560,000 to be exact.

The rally will be held at Sawtell Reserve Caravan Park, with the bikes to go on show on Saturday.
