Old rivals crave victory in Sunday match of the round
CRICKET: Maryvale Condamine all-rounder Andrew Ryan is in the team to play Wheatvale in the match of the round in Warwick cricket on Sunday.
With only two of the six rounds in Warwick cricket being played to a result due to a wet start to the summer, the men in white will be desperate for game time this weekend.
Maryvale and Wheatvale have played in the greatest number of grand finals in the past 20 seasons.
Regardless of the weather, one thing spectators won't see is Ryan picking up the ball while batting.
In a recent game against Sovereign Animals, Ryan was dismissed for obstructing the field, a little-used method of dismissal.
He was out for one but Maryvale still won by 165 runs.
"I blocked a delivery while batting, then picked up the ball and threw it to a fieldsman,” he said.
"Someone appealed and the umpire said that was the rule and I was out..
"I have returned a ball to the fieldsmen a fair few times to basically help out but won't be doing it again.
"I understand basically I have to ask permission to pick the ball up.”
After a low score a fortnight ago, Ryan is keen to bat well against Wheatvale.
"We have good player numbers this season and a couple of new signings,” he said.
At the end of last season, he retired as captain after eight or nine years after his side went down in the last over of the grand final to Warwick Hotel Colts.
He won one A-grade premiership as captain.
"I am enjoying just turning up to play, you don't have to think about the game before you go to cricket. The toughest times were the finals.”
His advice to new captain Paul Bourke this weekend is bat first, put on a decent score and pressure the Wheatvale top order.
