On the fast track
THE Penrose brothers are regulars at the VW Weekenders at the Warwick Dragway and both came away with fast times at the weekend event.
Rod had a time of 6.84 seconds for a 1/8 mile (200m) pass, the fastest to lunchtime Sunday and an average speed of 104mph.
"This is the first time I have run on NOS gas," Rod said.
By the end of the weekend, Wayne had the fastest speed of 113.07mph and time of 6.339 seconds.
Yesterday, their father Allan was on hand to encourage his sons who were both chasing the fastest time.
While the boys, Wayne and Rod, have been to all six VW meetings in Warwick, their father has only made it to four of the six.
"There is friendly rivalry between them," Allan said.
Motor racing is a sport that goes from generation to generation.
Allan started in kart racing and then competed in midgets speedway, boat and ski racing.
"I didn't like VWs but don't mind them now," Allan said.
"I am really proud of the boys. They have learnt well."
He isn't concerned about his sons' safety on the dragway due to all the safety gear.
"But my wife worries about the risks," he said.
Wayne said his team has spent 16 hours a day, seven days a week, for the past three weeks, preparing five cars for the trip from Wollongong to Warwick.
"I am a VW specialist. I restore the cars," Wayne said.
Wayne had the fastest time in Warwick last year.
The brothers will never miss the Warwick event.
"It is awesome and much bigger than Portland (first round of the two-round series)," he said.
The competition between the brothers is all in fun, according to Wayne.
While Wayne restores VWs, Rod supplies a lot of the racing parts for the vehicles.
"I absolutely love it here," Rod said.
"I make a few other trips to Warwick other than for the VW event."
A couple of years ago, Rod equalled a world record at Warwick in the sedan class with a time on the 1/8 mile (200m) of 5.86 seconds and a speed of 126mph.
Members of the Warwick District Drag Racing Association volunteered to run the event in conjunction with organiser Craig Hughes, of VWMA Magazine who has already booked in for next year.
The next club event is Dragfest on October 15-16, the biggest annual event for the drag racing club.
