On track for Cup

THE race track at Allman Park has never looked better.

With exactly two weeks until the Warwick Cup, Warwick Turf Club has been busy making sure things are on schedule.

Their irrigation system has produced a rich green track and organisers have their fingers firmly crossed for fine weather.

Turf club president Jim Costello - who has been in the role for about two years - said preparations were going well.

"In the two weeks left we'll be doing a lot of work with the grounds," he said.

"There's a lot of mowing, cleaning up and preparing, putting water on the course and trying to get it to the best standard for when the punters come in."

Dave Rossiter has been the grounds keeper at Allman Park for the past three or so years.

"I want to do it for the next 30 years," he said.

"I just love it."

In the lead-up to the cup, Mr Rossiter has been keeping an eye on the weather and juggling the level of irrigation accordingly.

"We just want to get the track up to the best possible state," he said.

"It's coming on really well. I mowed it just (yesterday) and will do it right before the Cup too. We leave the grass about three to four inches long to help soften the track for the horses."

Mr Rossiter said he was aiming for "about a four rating" track.

"That would be ideal," he said.

"Then every horse has the best opportunity when they race."

As is the way with Racing Queensland, nominations for the races won't come in until Tuesday October 4, and acceptances won't happen until the Thursday.

With about $60,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, Mr Costello was certain the entries would come in thick and fast.

"This is becoming one of the premier sprints on the Downs for open company horses," he said.

"We've got two open-class races sponsored by Fraser's Livestock and there are good-quality horses that will compete."

The Calcutta will be held at night on Friday October 7, in the lead-up to the Warwick Cup.

"People can come and participate in the auction and maybe buy a horse if the opportunity arises," Mr Costello said.

Tickets for the Warwick Cup are selling quickly, and can be purchased beforehand through 0408 776 673.
