On your marks: Runners ready for big racing weekend

FINAL registrations are open for the 16th annual Warwick Pentathrun.

As one of the biggest sporting events of the year, more than 300 competitors are prepared to move through the Southern Downs region on the weekend.

Racers still have until tonight to sign up online for the event. On the day, registrations will also be available for those who think they can go a bit extra and fit in another race.

Each event has its own registration fees, complete all five races for a discount rate.

Spread across an entire weekend the five races equal a distance of 42.2km and a $200 prize will be awarded to the person completing all five races with the quickest time.

This year, the two-day event will see a change in race two, the cross country track. Starting at the new location of Leslie Dam.

A more difficult terrain from previous years, Pentathrun president Karen Gilchrist gives warning to first time runners.

"It's more cross-country orientated and for those who haven't experienced that before will be feeling it,” she said.

The 4.6km run starts on the west side of Leslie Dam and follows the highway until the finishing point at the YMCA camp.

A free breakfast will be provided after the morning races for both days to keep athletes fuelled for the day.

The long lasting event is becoming a recognised name on the running calendar and sitting six weeks outside the Gold Coast marathon, the event attracts athletes from around the state preparing for the event.

"Runners love the event. It's informal, friendly, a great challenge and a good training run,” Mrs Gilchrist said.

Prizemoney and medallions will be awarded to outstanding runners on Saturday night at the Sandy Creek Pub.

Owner of the Sandy Creek Pub Kevin Kiley is excited to have the athletes finish the first day at the restaurant.

"We're looking forward to the weekend and hopefully it brings out a lot of hungry and thirsty competitors,” he said.

The results will be gathered from new timing devices, each racer will have one attached to their bib which will score their times.

The final race of the weekend is the 1500m, known as the sprint run. The race starts and finishes at Leslie Park with a barbecue finish followed by final awards.
