Once a jolly problematic bat colony camped by a billabong

THE colony of bats evicted from Hamilton Oval last week using scare tactics is still clinging to trees along the Condamine River in the centre of Warwick.

Grafton St resident Joy Steele said she spied the bats near her place well before they moved towards the high school.

"They were here about six or eight weeks before they even moved up towards the school," Ms Steele said.

"At first I didn't realise they were even bats but then a helicopter scared them off and I realised when they all flew about."

Even then, Ms Steele said they were hanging in their masses by the river.

While she hadn't been woken by the 3am fake gunshots and loud noises by the professional bat-scarers engaged by council, she had seen a man attempt to scare them off, but without success.

She said she would be thrilled to see them vacate the trees in town, but said she didn't want them to just move to another location and become someone else's problem.
