Storm shows the value of our SES putting in preparation

ONCE again our SES volunteers have proven their value to the community.

Yesterday's savage storm prompted more than 20 call-outs from residents fallen trees and windows smashed by hail.

The men and women in yellow braved the elements and put their training into action to help out their neighbours.

The SES can always use more hands on deck and will hold a sign-up and information night on February 2, 2016.

Yesterday's weather is a reminder to get your household emergency plan in order.

Know where to go if you need to evacuate, how to stay in contact with family members, what to do with pets and livestock, and whether your insurance is up to scratch.

Prepare an emergency kit with food and water for three days a portable radio and torch with spare batteries, a first-aid kit, medication, emergency clothes and shelter and a camping stove or gas burner.

Check your roof and clean your gutters, downpipes and drains.

Prune branches close to your house and secure loose items that could become missiles in high wind.

And don't forget the slogan, If it's flooded, forget it.

Just because you know a road well the surface can be washed away in a flood and you might drive into a sinkhole or start to float away.

Only a week ago a driver near Nobby had a lucky escape after making that very mistake so its not as far fetched as it sounds.

Make sure you have an alternative route in case you have to leave in a hurry.

They're not difficult precautions to take and may not be needed but if they are, you'll be glad you put in the effort.
