One Nation announces candidates for Burnett, Callide

FORMER Bundaberg mayoral candidate Elise Cottam has been chosen to run for One Nation in the seat of Callide at the next State Election, due to be held by 2018.

Bundaberg candidate Jane Truscott, Ashley Lynch in the seat of Burnett and Ms Cottam were among 36 candidates revealed by the party today.

Dr Truscott said people were "fed up with the major political parties".

"It's time for a change," she said.

The NewsMail has contacted the other two candidates for comment.

One Nation has enjoyed a renaissance in recent times, culminating in the election of four senators including leader Pauline Hanson at this year's Federal Election. The party has up to 16 per cent support in some polls.

Its support peaked at the 1998 Queensland election, when it won 11 seats with 22.7 per cent of the vote.

Ms Cottam was the party's candidate for Wide Bay in July's Federal Election. The seat was won by the LNP's Llew O'Brien, who succeeded former Nationals leader and deputy prime minister Warren Truss.

In the race for the Bundaberg mayoralty in March's council election, which was won by Jack Dempsey in a landslide with 71.09 per cent of the vote, Ms Cottam recorded 9.93 per cent.

Ms Cottam has worked in real estate, owned a small business and been a trainer, as well as volunteers for the SES. She also became the president of the Australian Timber Trainers Association in July last year.

Burnett, held by the LNP's Stephen Bennett, is a doughnut-shaped seat that surrounds the electorate of Bundaberg, and includes Bargara, Childers, Woodgate, Rosedale, Agnes Water and Miriam Vale.

Labor's Leanne Donaldson, who resigned from Cabinet last month after revelations she had not paid her rates for three years and driven her car unregistered, is the Member for Bundaberg.

She's expected to face a strong challenge from not only Dr Truscott but also Bundaberg councillor David Batt, unveiled by the LNP as its candidate this month.

Another One Nation candidate announced today was Fraser Coast councillor James Hansen in the seat of Maryborough.

Damian Huxham, who scored 19.16 per cent of the vote against the LNP's Keith Pitt in Hinkler for the party at this year's Federal Election, is its candidate for Hervey Bay.
