One of biggest weaner sales hits Southern Downs town

ONE of the biggest sales to hit Stanthorpe for sometime was held last Thursday, with more than 3000 head yarded for the Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale.

With new facilities to show off, organisers were pleased with the sale and the amount of participants on the day.

"There was more or less 3000 calves there on offer. Obviously the best of the district's calves and the cattle presented again in excellent condition given how the season's been. Very happy with the yarding,” George and Fuhrmann Director and auctioneer Maugan Benn said.

"People were there buying from Roma, surrounding districts, Toogoolawah.”

There was a fair spread on where the buyers came from.

Mr Benn praised the show society for the huge upgrades they've undertaken on the cattle yards.

"Exceptionally happy with what the Stanthorpe Show Society has done as far as improvement to the yards,” he said.

Champion pen of crossbred steers was Don Russell, Warwick Park Grazing, Liston consignment of angus/limousin-cross steers. The steers sold to 331cents/kg for 368 kilograms to return $1218/head.

The champion pen of crossbred heifers was awarded to Tony and Rhonda Sipple, Blue Hills, Warwick. Their pen of santa/ charolais-cross heifers sold to 278c/kg and weighed 289kg to return $804/head.

The champion pen of angus ateers was won by Mike Benn, Berrington Cattle Co, Deepwater. The steers sold to 324c/kg and weighed 340kg to return $1102/head on average.

Champion pen of angus heifers was awarded to Kevin Chorley, Kelmara, Tenterfield. The heifers sold to 372c/kg and weighed 340kg to make $1268/head.

The champion pen of hereford steers went to Peter Jeffrey, Avilen Pty Ltd, Isla, Tenterfield. The steers sold to 326c/kg and weighed 322kg to return $1050/head.

Champion pen of hereford heifers was awarded to John Gross, Misty Hills, Dalveen.
