OPINION: Our little city is not immune to danger

ONE of the perks of raising a family in a great town like Warwick is the sense of security and safety that comes with a smaller town.

People are generally friendly and our kids are afforded freedoms that those in bigger cities often are not.

They can often ride their bikes in the street and walk home from school with friends without parents being overly fearful they will be harmed along the way.

The reports of two men aggressively propositioning a teenager in public toilets yesterday is a harsh reminder to us all to not become too complacent.

In addition to be an awfully frightening and upsetting experience for the teenager involved, this incident serves as a reminder to us all that we need to remain vigilant when it comes to our children.

While it is wonderful to be involved in a smaller and arguably safer community as Warwick, we are far from immune to predatory behaviour.

Personally, this has been a big wake-up call for me and I will not allow my children to enter any public toilets alone.

I happened to be in Australiana Park at the time this was happening and it is quite unnerving to think that my son or his friend could have walked in to see indecent acts being carried out in broad daylight.

While my husband likes to tease me about being a "mollycoddler" and paranoid parent, this shows that sometimes you can never be too careful.
