Doctor under investigation after surgery mix up

A ROCKHAMPTON Hospital surgeon will be investigated after performing surgery on the wrong kidney.

Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service chief executive Len Richards said the clinical incident occurred earlier this year, but had only come to light at the weekend when the patient attended the hospital for further treatment.

An incident management team has been established to consider the actions required in relation to this surgeon.

The ABC reported health administrators are checking previous operations at the renal unit.

Mr Richards said the family had been offered all the available information and an apology during a meeting on Monday night.

Mr Richards also met with the family on Tuesday to offer his personal apology.

"We have offered this patient and family any assistance they require," Mr Richards said.

"I am making this incident public because it is essential that our staff and the community know that we will take action whenever an incident like this occurs.

"I want our patients to trust the care we provide and to do that we must be very honest about, and learn from, our mistakes.

"We try our best not to make mistakes, but when we do we must acknowledge them, review them and put in place the appropriate actions to ensure they never happen again.

"I have made it clear to all staff that quality and safety is the key focus for us now and into the future.

"We have created the position of executive director quality and safety to ensure the quality agenda is our number one priority."

Mr Richards said he could not disclose additional information about the patient or treatment, to ensure confidentiality was maintained.
