Open to new skills in netball
NETBALL CHAT with Linda Bunch
I HAD the pleasure of inviting a much younger but highly talented player to fill in with our A-grade team this week.
Holidays and illness took its toll on our team numbers and left an opening for 14-year-old Lillie Clarke to have a run with the "experienced” Doorslammers team (one of us has grossly more experience than others, but cough, splutter, no names need be mentioned).
While sharing my delight with Lillie post-game regarding how well she played, in particular the amount of ball flow down court she impeded or fully shut down, she noted she was pleased to have played well as she was out of her normal attacking position by playing wing defence.
It was a deja vu moment for me, back to a time many moons ago when my coach held out a bib with the words "Linda, I want you to play WD”.
After falling over every excuse in the book to not play WD including "but I don't run” it turned out I'm an okay WD.
From that moment on I have advocated being open to new challenges, learning new positions and widening your horizon by being a multi-skilled player and having a better understanding of the game by knowing what is required from each and every player/position on and off the court. Well done Lillie, go forth and let your skills grow.
Junior netball each Saturday at Barnes Park and senior games each Monday and Tuesday at WIRAC.
