Australia Day organisers cross fingers for fine weather
ORGANISERS of this year's Australia Day celebrations have their fingers crossed for fine weather, after rain washed out the event in the past few years.
Southern Downs Acting Mayor Ross Bartley said there would be celebrations and awards ceremonies held in Warwick and Stanthorpe.
Warwick celebrations will get under way in Queens Park at 4pm on January 26.
"As many residents may remember, the celebrations had been moved to Victoria Park in previous wet years but we are looking good for fine weather on January 26," Cr Bartley said.
He added it was the perfect opportunity to have a family day out and celebrate everything that was great about Australia.
"As usual, there is a jam-packed program of entertainment at Warwick, with face painting, food stalls, music, citizenship ceremony, Australia Day awards ceremony and the grand finale of the spectacular fireworks display," he said.
Stanthorpe celebrations will start at Weeroona Park at 2pm, with musical entertainment, barbecue, flag raising and a citizenship ceremony during the awards presentation.
"We look forward to seeing many people at both celebrations and also paying tribute to our local heroes during the awards ceremonies," Cr Bartley said.
Killarney, Pratten and Allora will also hold celebrations on Australia Day and Cr Bartley encouraged residents to participate in those local events as well.
