Our region’s finest on show in the city
THE region is shining brightly in every aspect at the Ekka, with the presence and success of Southern Downs producers and exhibitors cementing our place amongst Queensland's best.
Our fresh produce was the star of the show in the Regional Harvest, showcasing some of the finest foods grown on the Southern Downs.
Southern Downs mayor Peter Blundell and Warwick Visitor Information Centre co-ordinator Amy Walker were on hand Friday to share our region's goods with thousands of people passing through the gates.
Mrs Walker said the Regional Harvest was a promotional opportunity for the Southern Downs to draw on agri-tourism.
"It's about letting Brisbanites know what is just down the road," she said.
"The produce we have on display is from Killarney through to Warwick and down to the Granite Belt."
The bright display really set the scene for the Southern Downs, featuring some of our most famous products.
"We have everything which is currently seasonal - apples, radishes, brussels sprouts and pumpkins," Mrs Walker said.
"There's also the value-added stuff as well such as wines and ciders."
Donning a Regional Harvest apron and holding a handful of red apples, Cr Blundell said the display was a wonderful opportunity for the Southern Downs.
"What we want to promote is what we produce on the Southern Downs," he said.
"It's about letting people know where we are and what we do."
Cr Blundell said the quality of produce from the Southern Downs really had to be experienced to be believed.
"It never ceases to amaze me the range and quality of produce in our region and what local people can create with it," he said.
"We want people to explore, enjoy and experience the Southern Downs."
The Southern Downs display was alongside displays showcasing the Scenic Rim and Lockyer Valley regions.
For those heading to the Ekka, the Regional Harvest can be found on the bottom floor of the new Royal International Convention Centre.
