OUR SAY: A type of spirit we should be proud of
IT was a heart-warming moment when Lisa Hudson opened up about what went on in her backyard over the weekend.
Lisa is the partner of Senior Constable Matt Shields, a police officer from Allora who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
I met with her, and officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon at Warwick police station yesterday to talk about the backyard blitz that took place at the home.
Garden beds were built, concrete was painted, countless holes were dug and numerous gifts were donated to help turn the couple's dry and dusty lawn into dream backyard.
It was an emotional conversation, partially because of the incredible effort from more than 30 police officers and volunteers but also because of the debilitating disease that has struck one of Allora's most loved residents.
In light of that, what we talked about didn't linger on the negative; we shone light on the overwhelming generosity this community.
Both Snr Sgt Deacon and Lisa were eager to thank those who helped out on the day, and did their best to list all the community groups, people and businesses that chipped in over the weekend.
Now that the tough labour is over, it's a perfect time to remember how far a simple idea and a lot of hard work can go towards brightening someone's day.
