Our students on track for success at the nationals

ATHLETICS: Scots PGC College pair Will Gilmore and Lucy Bourke are two medal winners from Warwick who have qualified to compete at the nationals in Cairns on December 7-9.

Gilmore is set to compete in the 14 years hammer after winning a silver medal at the Queensland School Sport Track and Field Championships at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre.

He trains at home on the Southern Downs but has had some training sessions with Allora Olympian Matthew Denny at Nudgee College and the QSAC.

Gilmore was second in discus and third in hammer last year and said he wasn't keen to select between his two events.

"I like both,” he said.

As well as his state athletics medals, Gilmore has a bronze medal from the 50m butterfly in the Queensland swimming championships.

Lucy Bourke was second in javelin at Darling Downs and then won silver at the state championships.

She didn't train for the javelin believing her best chance of success at state level was in sprints.

"I didn't know I was going to throw a five-metre personal best in javelin at the state championships,” she said.

Two former Warwick High students won medals, Zac Caterson won a silver in javelin and bronze in discus and shot, and Larissa Vickers won silver in a walk. Brendan Hoffman had a fourth and fifth.

Scots PGC student Kira Holmes was sixth in women's discus and ninth in javelin.
