Outlook improves after rain

SANDY Creek farmer Ron Benz reckons it is much easier to drive away from the farm for a night at the footy when the crops are green and the ground wet.

By the time he and son Wayne arrived at Father Ranger Oval for the Cowboys games with Brothers on Saturday, they had received 50mm of rain.

After flooding rains two months ago, Mr Benz said he still had flood fences down but that wasn't worrying him on Saturday.

“That has been happening on the flats for 100 years,” Mr Benz said.

Once the rain clears, Mr Benz said he would plant oats.

“It will only take three or four days to dry up on the Sandy Creek flats.”

The Benz family stopped dairying in 1999 and rate this year as having the best outlook for winter in the past 12 years.

“I am hoping for an old-style winter with rain once a month,” Mr Benz said.

He is also upbeat about a strong cattle market.

“But it is not too good if you are trying to buy stores,” he said.

Mr Benz's son Wayne said the rain on Friday and at the weekend would green up the grass and lessen the fire risk for now.

While both father and son back the Warwick Cowboys, Ron is a Roosters man and Wayne a fanatic Raiders supporter.
