Palace Cows still moo-ving in annual carnival

CRICKET: If anyone doubts cricket has its ups and downs, ask Palace Cows original Gary Millard.

He once had 1-0 off the first ball of the game against Originals in the days of one-game-a-day cricket, only for his team to concede more than 700 runs.

"We should have left the opener in. On the same day, we thought Christmas had come early when we got Brisbane A-grade player Keith Charles out for 90-odd, then Joe Marsh came in and scored 270,” he said.

Millard, Kyle Lyons and the Henningsen brothers, Peter and Bevan, are the four originals from the first carnival when the old Palace Hotel was headquarters.

"A lot of us were playing indoor cricket at the time. Craig O'Brien was a great influence on starting the team and now his nephews, Matt and Jayden, play,” Millard said.

Nathan Costello recalled one game when the team was 9-29 and he combined with Craig Jeffries to take the score to 39.

"It was the highest partnership of the game,” he said.

It hasn't all been about chasing leather. Graham Millward scored a double century for Cows and they won prizemoney when the teams were split into three divisions on the final day.

The Cows went down in their first game yesterday. Batting first, Darren Grayson top-scored for Cows with 11 in 74. Maryvale Condy made 267, Rob Lindsay hitting 75.

Top-ranked Stunned Mullets won first up by 36runs from SBX XI. Lachlan Gross (61) and P.J. Brown (57) batted best. Hugh's XI shocked Dalrymple Dongers with a last-over win at Allora.

Tom Morris (Dongers) hit 55 and Darcy Murphy (Hugh's XI) 30.
