Pampering for pregnant mums

THE time before a baby is born is a special time, but often expectant mothers don't get an opportunity to relax.

For pregnant women, an hour spent relaxing on the massage table is a big deal.

Mothers who don't have the time or cannot visit a day spa now are able to receive massages in their own home as Ripple Massage expands its mobile service on the Sunshine Coast.

Ripple Massage owner and mother Alison Shaw said she had identified the need for the in-home service and thought all mothers could benefit.

Ms Shaw said that while an abundance of massage service providers was available, few specialised in pregnancy massage or offered mobile services.

"We saw a real niche market for that," Ms Shaw said.

She said pregnancy massage was specialised and was tailored to suit each mother, depending on their stage of pregnancy.

While some pressure points had to be avoided, Ripple Massage's main concern was that the mum was comfortable on the table, she said.

Attention to detail - such as making sure the table was bolstered with pillows if needed and realising that mums may need a break if the baby was pressing on the bladder - made a difference.

Ms Shaw said that with so much to think about with a baby on the way and the gifts showered on the newborn, mothers needed something special to look forward to and feel pampered.

Meridan Plains mother of two Tendai Dawkins, who had a massage while pregnant with her first child, said mums-to-be needed to focus on their own bodies.

"Going day by day, you just don't realise how stressed you are," Mrs Dawkins said.

She said mothers needed to take time out for themselves before the baby arrived.

"When you have kids, you just don't have time out," Mrs Dawkins said.

The latest trend in Australia for expectant parents is to celebrate the special time before the birth with a mini-break called a babymoon.

Ripple Massage offers babymoon packages which can include couple massages - something Ms Shaw said had proved popular in recent years.
