Paralympian to spur on local champs

SPORTS AWARDS: Brooke Dwan will have a simple message for monthly junior sports star winners at the annual Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year dinner on March 31.

"If you want to achieve your ambitions, you have to be willing to sacrifice and work hard," Dwan said.

A winner of four bronze medals in swimming at two Paralympics, Dwan will be guest speaker at the annual dinner at the Hawker Road Function Centre.

As well as her Paralympic success, she won silver in the 1998 world championships.

Dwan rose to prominence in swimming while a boarder at St Peters College in Brisbane.

She completed year 12 over two years so she could train hard and swim in the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney.

After studying at the Queensland University of Technology and then James Cook University, she graduated as a teacher, did supply work in North Queensland near her hometown Giru before being offered a position at The Scots PGC College in Warwick.

Brooke and husband Matt have a 16-month-old daughter Willow but family responsibilities haven't stopped her love of swimming.

"I once swam 55 kilometres a week in training and now swim two kilometres in a session," she said.

The successes of all 11 monthly winners will be highlighted at the annual sports awards night.

The overall winner will receive a $500 cheque from the Warwick Credit Union and the Doc Bodimeade Memorial Encouragement Award winner will receive a $250 cheque from the Condamine Sports Club.

For the first time in almost a decade, volunteer awards will be part of the junior sports star night with the winner receiving a trophy and having the opportunity to select their favoured club to receive the $500 first prize from the Condamine Sports Club.

Nominations for the volunteers award are still open with information from Garry Hanson on 0426 507989.

All welcome to the awards night with tickets on sale tomorrow for $28 from the front counter of the Daily News.
