VIDEO: Paramedic celebrates 40 years of service
MEMBERS of the Warwick ambulance service yesterday congratulated one of their own for long service in a career spanning 40 years.
Advanced Care Paramedic Paul Ryan arrived in Warwick in 1992 after serving on the Gold Coast.
An afternoon tea was held yesterday at the Percy St ambulance station to celebrate Mr Ryan's milestone ahead of his retirement next fortnight.
"It's a fantastic achievement - you don't see too many officers achieve that many years," said long-time friend and Acting Assistant Commissioner Glen Maule.
"We are awarding him with an ambulance long service medal celebrating and on Friday night will be celebrating his retirement," Mr Maule said.
Mr Maule said Mr Ryan was an inspiration for other paramedics making their way into the field.
"Paul's served with dedication and compassion with all the patients he has treated and transported in his long career," he said.
"He's been a tremendous role model and mentor for all the new students and paramedics as they've started their years."
Describing Mr Ryan as one of life's true gentlemen, Mr Maule said Mr Ryan had been a great friend and colleague throughout his long-spanning career.
"I have always found him to be approachable for a chat about any issues we might have," Mr Maule said.
"He's been a good sounding board for changes in the workforce."
Mr Maule said it was important to recognise the hard work of paramedics who serve the community around the clock.
"We have over 20 staff here in Warwick who provide coverage 24 hours a day, and are one of the largest stations in the Darling Downs network," he said.
"Especially with that amount of service, many in a paramedic role have been very stable in their careers."
