Paramedics and firies the 'most trusted' Aussie workers

WHETHER it is running into burning buildings, helping out at traffic accidents or dealing with medical emergencies, our firefighters and ambulance officers spend a fair amount of time together.

Now they share the number one spot on the Readers Digest list of Australia's most trusted professions.

Paramedics have finished on top for the past 10 years.

But it is the first time in the past decade firefighters have been able to move up from second place.

Warwick fire station officer Darren Welsh said it was an honour to be considered as the most trustworthy profession in the country.

"It is a huge compliment considering how many other professions out there service the community in various ways," he said.

Mr Welsh said he could not see sharing the top of the podium with paramedics being an issue.

"I have huge respect and admiration for the job paramedics do," he said.

"I think we work well together."

Advanced care paramedic Joanna Lindsay agreed.

"We definitely work well together," she said.

"I think we have great respect for each other and the work that we do."

Ms Lindsay, who has been a paramedic for nine years - four and a half of them in Warwick - said she was not sure of the exact reason those in her shoes were considered to be the most trustworthy.

"I guess we attend to people in their time of need and are able to assist them," she said.

"They look to us when they need help."

SES volunteers held onto their third spot placing from last year and long-time SES volunteer Julie McKavanagh said it was a pretty good feeling to know that the public trusted her to do her job.

"I enjoy being able to help people when they are in a vulnerable situation," she said.

Nurses, pilots, doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians, air traffic controllers and farmers rounded out the rest of the top 10 places.

Cleaners took out the half-way mark in the list of 50 professions.

The least trusted professions were real estate agents, sex workers, call centre staff, insurance salespeople, politicians and door-to-door salespeople.
