Parents mourn death of son
A FORMER Warwick man is battling a father's worst nightmare - losing a child.
Mick and Zoe Elwell lost their youngest son Lincoln on Monday after a five-month long hospital battle.
Now, a GoFundMe campaign started by friend Lauren Weribone is aiming to raise $10,000 to help pay for baby Lincoln's funeral expenses.
"They're the bravest people I've ever met and they've been handling it really well," Miss Weribone said.
"I've known Mick for a couple of years now and he's a very strong, brave man and he and Zoe have been by Lincoln's side through this whole process.
"Mick has always been there to help us with starting our business or give a helping hand, they're just such beautiful caring people and need as much support as they can get.
"I too had a baby six months ago and have lost a niece at three months so it's really hit home for me."
Nine days after he was born, Lincoln contracted a life-threatening virus that sent him to the Lady Cilento Hospital in Brisbane.
On Monday, after 135 days in hospital, his life was cut short as he went into cardiac arrest.
A tradesman, Mr Elwell took time off work to be with his wife and young son through the ordeal, while his older siblings Benjamin, 5 and Jordan, 7 stay with their grandparents in Toowoomba.
"It's just a terrible time for them at the moment," Miss Weribone said.
"It's definitely horrible thing to happen to anyone but Mick does seem to be holding it together quite well.
"He sent us a personal message letting us know the tragic news and that he was just trying to wrap his head around everything.
"They've had to stay in a motel room to be in Brisbane with Lincoln and pay for fuel for trips back to Toowoomba.
"They've had to pay a lot of that out of their own pocket and cut into their savings quite a bit while Mick's not working."
Mr and Mrs Elwell have documented their son's battle on the Baby Lincoln's PICU Facebook page.
"Everybody tried their hardest to save him… there was nothing that could be done," they wrote yesterday.
"A piece of us died with our baby … we feel broken and shattered.
"We spent the day with Lincoln to say our final goodbyes."
Miss Weribone said she wanted to help raise awareness for the virus that killed Lincoln as well as help cover his funeral expenses.
And she's not the only one - another GoFundMe page has been started by Rachel Grayson to help along the way.
"I think it's important as well to create awareness for the actual illness that Lincoln developed, enterovirus myocarditis," she said.
"Obviously Mick has gone out of his way to help others to make people want to dig deep and support this cause.
"The page has already received quite a few donations and some people have given hundreds of dollars so I just want to say thank you to everyone who has donated."
