Patch roadworks dog council, ratepayers

BOTH the Southern Downs Regional Council and ratepayers agree it is a problem, but they all have to put up with the region's patchy roadworks for the time being.

Southern Downs Regional Council's acting director of engineering and manager of works construction Eric Kraak said the council had received many calls from residents asking why one part of a road or street was being repaired while another damaged section was left untouched.

Mr Kraak was the first to admit it appeared disorganised, but said it was because of the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) assessments completed after the 2010/2011 floods.

"The damage assessment was done after the 2011 floods and that is what is being fixed," he said.

"The approval for NDRRA was for certain parts of the roads, and that is all the contractors can repair.

"Over time other parts of the road have gotten worse, but the contractors are not allowed to fix it.

"It is the council's responsibility and we are working on repairing the roads."

Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley said he could understand why residents were concerned.

"As councillors we have been getting flak from residents," he said.

"It is hard to explain why only a small portion of the road is being repaired and that the contractors are only allowed to work on strict areas."

Cr Bartley asked residents to be patient.

"Once the contractors have finished their part the council will continue their maintenance schedule," he said.

"It would be a bit silly for us to do the work that is approved to be done with federal money."

Cr Bartley said the wet conditions had also made it difficult for both council and the contract workers to stick to their maintenance schedule.
