Patient accused of assaulting nurses in court

ONE of seven male patients accused of the alleged planned attack and assault of three nurses at Toowoomba's Baillie Henderson Hospital has appeared before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

Joshua Wiremu Poharama, 27, appeared before Acting Magistrate Roger Stark by video link to the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre in Brisbane where he is being held while on remand.

During the brief court appearance Friday, he was not required to enter any pleas to the charges of one count of grievous bodily harm and three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm in company arising from the incident on Saturday, January 19.

Police claim three male nurses aged 31, 50 and 51 respectively, were set upon in the medium-security Ridley unit about 11.45pm.

The 31-year-old nurse sustained serious injuries to his eye sockets and jaw in the incident.

Poharama's solicitor David Burns told the court he had received the police brief of evidence pertaining to the matter and asked for an adjournment.

It was likely the charges would be taken up to the higher court by way of full hand-up committal hearing on the next court date, Mr Burns said.

Mr Stark therefore remanded Poharama in custody and adjourned the matters for committal mention back in the same court on August 30.

The other defendants are due to face court in November.
