Pat's purler of an effort
AKOORAMAK resident Pat Ramalli said her only New Year wish was to see her hand-knitted beanies sent to orphaned children and soldiers in Afghanistan.
Yesterday, when a group of past and current servicemen visited the aged care home, her wish became reality.
Corporal Brendan Bowring, who has returned to Australia from his 2009-2010 posting in Afghanistan, was among the visiting group and wanted to thank the Warwick residents for their knitted goods.
"The beanies were great - I've still got mine. All the soldiers love them as it gets cold over there in winter, everything is covered in snow," he said.
Corp. Bowring said it was lovely receiving anything with a homey touch while he was serving overseas.
"It's the simplest things like that and the care packages that really do boost our days," he said.
A soldier, who is due to fly out to Afghanistan in the next few weeks, promised the residents he'd take over the hand-knitted items with him.
Mrs Ramalli said she was "so happy" they were going over and vowed to keep making them. Afterwards, another resident hopped on the piano and played the beautiful tune, Maori's Farewell.
