Paul is back on home soil
PAUL O’Leary has played in four of the past five Pan Pacific Games and can’t wait to get on his Cunningham Polocrosse Club home fields at Bony Mountain tomorrow.
“It is great to come up against players of my own age,” Paul said.
The 54-year-old was president of the Cunningham club for 12 years until 2008 and is over the moon the games are on his club’s home ground.
“It is great we can play on all weather fields as it is too wet at the Gold Coast.”
Paul is always in the same team as Chinchilla resident Murray Sturgess who organises a team for each games.
The Chinchilla team includes Sturgess, past state president Phillip Hughes, Doug Haig and Darryl O’Leary from Chinchilla, St George player John Knights and Paul O’Leary from the Cunningham club.
“My brother Darryl hadn’t played polocrosse for 35 years but made a comeback with Chinchilla club this season and will play in the Pan Pacs,” Paul said.
“It is going to be a great thrill to play with Darryl in the same section. I will play number one, Doug Haig will be our number two and Darryl will play number three.
“The games polocrosse is competitive, the 40s and over is equivalent to a B-grade club competition and the 50s and over is C-grade standard polocrosse.”
Paul won a gold medal at his first Pan Pacific Games and has won two silver and one bronze medal since.
While he is serious about striving for a medal, Paul hasn’t looked at the composition of the other open over 50s teams.
“We just do our best against whoever we come up against,” Paul said.
He will play his six-year-old mare Windebt at the weekend.
One of the strongest teams in the open over 40s age group is Curtis Racquets, which includes Cunningham player Roly Slack-Smith. Last year, he played with Tansey but now lives at Cunningham.
The team also includes Gold Coast trio Robert Copeland, Mike Williams and Chris Franklin, Wandoan player Cal Moore and Victorian star Craig Cameron.
Franklin and Cameron have played for Australia while Williams is a Toowoomba regional councillor.
