Peaceful art on way to garden

THE Warwick Peace Garden is set to welcome an exciting new asset, with stunning sandstone sculptures being crafted at the hands of local talents.

Acclaimed artist Paul Stumkat and his wife Kylie have been busy chiselling simple pieces of sandstone into striking ornaments.

Crafted on sturdy Yangan sandstone, the completed sculptures will be an attractive new component to the entrance.

Mr Stumkat said the designs were developed with Peace Garden designer Bill Greer and held a special meaning to the garden.

They will feature images of native flora and fauna, replicating the entirely native plant life that can be found within the Peace Garden.

"It is an artistic reflection of what the peace garden is all about and it is a way to have our native species immortalised in stone," Mr Stumkat said.

"They will bring an extra 3-D element certainly and it will be an extra attraction and reason for people to come here."

Mr Stumkat added the longevity of sandstone will allow the pieces to serve as a snapshot of time, capturing the native species.

The sculptures were funded through a Regional Arts Development Fund grant and are part of ongoing works to be completed before the Peace Garden's grand opening next year.

Committee member Lenore Neville said the garden was a work in progress, with volunteers steadily developing the spot over the past five years.

She said the spot is being enjoyed by a number of people already and it would only get more popular with time.

"As time goes on and the plants get bigger it will be a lot more appealing to people I think," he said.

The committee will hold a concert at the SOTE auditorium this Sunday to help raise more funds towards completing the garden.

Tickets are available at the door and entertainment kicks of at 2pm. Anyone interested in helping complete work at the Peace Garden can call Lenore on 4661 9962 or Bill on 4661 9387.

Concert

A concert will be held this Sunday to raise funds to allow the committee to complete the garden entrance.

It will take place at the SOTE auditorium from 2pm and will feature local artists, including the East St Singers and Panda and the Bears.

Entry is $10 for adults, kids $5 and kids under five free.
