Pedophile priest with more than 50 victims will die in jail

A PEDOPHILE priest who tormented dozens of victims during his decades of service to the Catholic Church will likely die in jail after he was sentenced to a further eight years in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Gerard Risdale, a sickly elderly former priest who previously admitted to the abuse of more than 50 children, was due to be released in 2019 but will now serve time until at least 2022.

The 79-year-old has been in a Victorian jail since the early 90s over a serious of offences committed against children as young as four - many of whom were altar boys - between 1961 and 1982.

Evidence brought against him in last years parliamentary inquiry into child sex abuse led police to charge him with an additional 30 offences relating to the abuse of 11 boys and three girls.
