Performers impress at busking champs

FROM strings to woodwinds, harmonicas to magic shows, all manner of entertainment filled the streets of Stanthorpe.

Solo performers, groups and even a magician brought the town's main street to life for the Australian National Busking Championships south-east Queensland regional finals on Saturday.

The event marked the second time the event had taken place in Stanthorpe, after its debut in the town during the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival last year.

Buskers took to the main street to showcase their talents, before the final performances and presentations at Weeroona Park.

The championships were brought back to the town in a combined effort between Stanthorpe Rotary and organisers of the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival.

Stanthorpe Rotary president Stephen Tancred welcomed the response to the day.

"It's great; the buskers are terrific,” Mr Tancred said.

He said punters had been hugely supportive of the performers though buying 'busking dollars' and voting for their favourite acts.

Mr Tancred said it was great to see such diverse talent on show.

"The town's packed, it's a great festival,” he said.

Apple and Grape director Greg Thouard said the 35 buskers had come from as far as Canberra to perform.

He said all of this injected life into the town.

"The business people have said trade is up and that's a real positive,” Mr Thouard said.

Among the stunning talent was family band The Haystack Mountain Hermits, from the Gold Coast Hinterland, who claimed the adult open category and people's choice.
