Perkins wins top award for Wattles Warriors season

WATTLES teak tough forward and A-grade skipper Dale Perkins was presented with the club's premier player award this season as the 2016 Clifton Courier Player of the Year.

The Stanthorpe based back-rower capped a more than impressive initial season with the Warriors when named the recipient of an award first presented in 1975 that boasts names such as international forward Greg Platz and ARL/NRL players Robbie Tew and Tony Duggan.

A-grade coach Gary Lawrence said Perkins had been his outstanding forward of the season.

"The Player of the Year award certainly equates to Dale's commitment this year. He has been a fine ambassador for the club on and off the field, and in a challenging year has led by example,” Lawrence said.

News that will please Wattles band of supporters will be that the primary producer from Ballandean has committed to run on in the green and gold again in 2017 along with the vast majority of his team mates from this season.

"I certainly wasn't expecting such an honour after I struggled through some weeks with injury, but I feel very honoured to receive such a great award when you look at some of the previous winners names on the trophy,” Dale said.

"So many great footballers have received the Clifton Courier Shield before me and to now have my name etched with theirs is a great feeling.”

The big forward has five years of Toowoomba Rugby League first grade under his belt, four seasons with the Gatton Hawks which included a premiership win before this season in the green and gold and considers his Player of the Year honour among his career highlights.

"A big vote of thanks to the entire Wattles club and supporters, I have already committed to the Warriors for next year and look forward to another few years with the club,” he said.

The Rudds Pub Colt of the Year award was just reward for Joe Morris after a sensational season, particularly impressing Gary Lawrence.

"In his first year out of under 18, Joe handled the rough and tumble of playing hooker in A grade with aplomb,” Lawrence said.

"Disappointingly his season was cut short though with injury.”

It was a night of silverware for the Morris family. Joe's brothers Tom and Nick also carried home awards, Tom the best back in U18 and Nick the Michael Fogarty Memorial Trophy for club best team man.

A new addition to Wattles prestigious list of perpetual awards is the Terry Doyle Memorial Trophy for the Junior Footballer of the Year. The award recognises the contribution to the Wattles club of former long serving club president and secretary Terry Doyle, the trophy donated by Brian and Jackie Doyle and won by Max Rubie.

Best and fairest winners: Vince Bermingham Memorial Trophy - Under 18 best and fairest: Nick Van Der Poel; The Glass Family Trophy - Reserve grade best and fairest: Mitchell Duff; Lew Platz Cup - A Grade best and fairest: Michael Duggan.
