Permits to burn cancelled for Southern Downs

DUE to current and predicted weather conditions and significant fire activity across the state, all permits to light fires in the Southern Downs and Goondiwindi areas have been cancelled for the next 72 hours.

All permits to light fire for Roma, including the Warrego and Maranoa districts, have been cancelled indefinitely. Further advice on permits to light will be issued on Wednesday.

A series of large-scale fires are burning in the Warrego and Maranoa districts, with the majority of fire activity focused around Mitchell, Roma, Charleville, Wyandra, Cunnamulla and Thargomindah.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said no fires are burning in the Warwick area this morning.

Residents in areas where fires are burning are advised to keep their doors and windows closed and if they suffer from respiratory illness and keep medication close by. Motorists are urged to drive to the conditions and take care.

If you are concerned about smoke or fire, call 000 immediately.
