Phoneix's new head coach fails to help team produce win

HE found out he only had the head coaching job at the Phoenix just a day before taking Ricki Herbert's vacated position.

But former assistant Chris Greenacre's players could not respond, with Wellington going down 2-1 to Newcastle at Westpac Stadium on Wednesday night.

That means just one coach, Alistair Edwards at the Glory against the Mariners in round 21, has toasted a debut A-League win in a match straight after a changing of the guard.

The Phoenix outfit was poor, and Wednesday's loss kept the team in last place, six points behind the sixth-placed Jets - now little chance of making the finals.

They had a chance to snatch much-needed points deep into injury time, courtesy of a Taylor Regan error in the Jets defensive line.

Regan's miss-hit at a clearance attempt fell straight to Jeremy Brockie, who shot just wide.

Brockie did however capitalise from a poor Regan header on the hour, pouncing on a half volley, which made it 2-1 to the visitors.

But it was too little, too late, after a great finish by the Jets' Adam Taggart in the 19th minute, and a powerful low header from Michael Bridges just before halftime.
