Physical activity is the key to avoiding falls

IT IS a fact that one in three people older than 65 have a fall each year, which can result in long term hospitalisation, loss of independence and even premature death.

But northern NSW falls prevention co-ordinator Mary-Clare Maloney was adamant that staying physically active could greatly reduce risk of injury by improving balance and strength.

"Older people can go from strength to strength by participating in regular Tai Chi, group exercise programs, Pilates, Gym sessions or simple exercises at home to improve muscle strength and balance," she said.

Exercise improves overall muscle strength, keeps joints agile and allows older people to complete daily activities more easily, lessening the chance of a bad fall.
