Plans for new estate assessed by council

A LARGE chunk of the former home of the Warwick Christian College will be sold off and redeveloped in several stages over the course of the next few years.

Formerly known as Kingswood Camp, the 13.23 hectare site on Canningvale Rd south of Warwick was bought by the college's umbrella body Christian Community Ministries in 2007 for $1.5 million.

The organisation has submitted a development application to the Southern Downs Regional Council but is staying tight-lipped on the details at this stage.

It is understood that up to as many as 90 homes could end up on the site, with the plan to build on the large vacant paddocks in front of the existing buildings.

Those buildings are still used for educational purposes by Christian Community Ministries (CCM) as a "flexible learning hub" for 25 students at risk of disengagement.

Former Warwick Christian College principal and now chief operating officer for CCM Terrence McCorkell confirmed the plan was a goer.

"Council is currently assessing an application for a residential and school development at 62 Canningvale Road," he said.

"Subject to approval, the developer is hopeful of commencing construction on site sometime in 2015.

"The development is still in the planning stage and we hope to be able to provide more information early next year."

Mr McCorkell confirmed the existing school would remain, with operations to "continue as normal".

"The campus at Canningvale Rd is still registered as a school and is now called the Southern Downs Flexible Learning Hub," he said.

Council was unable to confirm yesterday if the plan was to be publicly advertised for community comment.
