Plants stolen from new bromeliad and herb gardens

STAFF have been cleaning up after plants were stolen from the new bromeliad and herb gardens next to the Hervey Bay Orchid House.

Horticulturalist Darryl Coombes said it was disheartening after members of the Bromeliad Society spent hours of their own time and resources creating the gardens for the public to enjoy.

"It's very sad," he said.

"The gardens are here for everyone to enjoy and these thieves have essentially stolen from the Fraser Coast community.

"My staff and team of volunteers spend a lot of time ensuring that the Orchid House and Botanic Gardens are in immaculate condition and this has just created an unnecessary expense for us.

"The Brom Society in particular was very disappointed to hear of the theft after all the work they put in to create the new gardens."

Mr Coombes said the theft happened earlier this week and he encouraged members of the public to phone the council on 1300 794 929 or the police if they saw any suspicious activity in the gardens.

"We have cleaned up the majority of the site and will replant as soon as possible," he said.

"The majority of the public do the right thing but unfortunately there are some people who can't be trusted."
