Agnes Water and 1770 say no to plastic bags

THE Discovery Coast Environment Group are closing in on launching an initiative to rid Agnes Water and 1770 of plastic bags.

The group has been operating for a year and runs beach clean-up days and turtle monitoring programs.

Tanya Puglisi who chairs the group said they've got all of the businesses - bar one - in the area on board and ready to make Agnes Water and 1770 a plastic bag free zone.

"This is the biggest campaign we've had and we should be up and running in February next year," she said.

"We're aiming to source 1000 "tote" or cotton bags for the area at the moment and we hope to get around 3000 bags which should be able to replace plastic bags."

1000 tote bags costs around $1500.

The group will be holding BBQ fundraisers and approaching businesses and politicians to fund the environmentally friendly initiative.

"It's important to get rid of plastic bags for a number of reasons but we do see them wash up on beaches down here and we also find plenty of turtles who consume them," she said.

"We're a group of people who care about the environment and we want to eliminate plastic bags from the region," she said.

Tanya said the group will ramp up their efforts over the school holidays to keep the beaches clean and monitor the turtles more thoroughly.

"We'll be doing a lot of research on turtle hatchlings and we'll also conduct a turtle census," she said.

The group will hold a meeting tonight at 530pm at the Beachcombers Cafe 1770.
