Play it safe with bubs when it comes to change tables

SAFE-proofing homes for a baby can require an extensive amount of planning and altering.

But sometimes it's the baby equipment causing the damage.

Baby change tables are the reason about 90 infants a year go to Queensland hospital emergency departments each year.

Office of Fair Trading product safety expert David Strachan said recent baby change table-related injury data was alarming and parents needed to understand the risk of uninformed choices or even a brief lapse in concentration could pose to their babies.

Stepping Stones childcare centre Gladstone changes dirty nappies on a daily basis.

Stepping Stones childcare director Heather Curran said they followed strict safety precautions when changing babies' nappies.

"We use nappy change mats of Australian standard and we use a bench which is of Australian standard height," she said.

The portable change mat is non-slip and lightweight.

"We're always making sure we have all of the supplies ready so we don't have to leave the table."

Qualified workers are only allowed to change nappies in the centre.

"We never leave (the bubs) unattended," she said.

"Our nappy changing area is behind a gate so it is separated from the play area," she said.

She said parents need to be aware if they use a nappy change table there is a risk of the child falling off and precautions must be taken.
