Players take shot at nationals
THREE Warwick hockey veterans will take part in the 2011 Women's Masters National Hockey Championships in Perth from September 30 until October 8.
While Queenslanders at heart, the women will represent South Australia when they take to the field.
Toni Cox of Warwick and Kylie Hollist, who resides in Toowoomba will the over-35 division, and Cate Hodgson, who lives in Brisbane, will play in the over-45 team.
Cox, who has played competitive hockey for seven years, said the meet will be difficult, but is excited about playing on the national stage.
"It's going to be a tough competition, but I am looking forward to the championships," she said.
"I have been given the opportunity to co-captain the team, so I'm rapt."
As the level of hockey within the state is highly competitive, players who are not successful in selection of the Queensland squads are eligible for selection within other state teams, furthering the chance to compete and gain valuable playing experience for players like Cox.
Flying out for Perth tomorrow, the teams will undergo four days of training before hitting the field for their first match.
"We will play a match against the other states within our division, and making finals will depend on our final placing within these matches," Cox said.
Following the Perth Nationals, an over 40s and 50s Australian team will be selected to compete at a Master's World Cup in England in August 2012.
