Players still jostling for Socceroos’ spots

FEWER than three weeks out from the World Cup in Brazil, Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is yet to settle on his line-up for the tournament opener against Chile on June 14.

Australia's farewell match against South Africa, in front of an expected sell-out crowd at ANZ Stadium tonight, will be followed by just one more friendly against Croatia, before the game against the South Americans.

But Postecoglou said he believed just three weeks was enough time to settle on a team, which few are expecting to test the might of the Netherlands and Spain, or Chile.

"Three weeks in the world of football; it can be a lifetime. A lot of things can change," he said.

"Tomorrow night (tonight) some guys will get a game because they need a game. If they impress, of course it brings them into calculations."

Three weeks will certainly be a long time for Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak.

He is nearing a return to full fitness from the groin injury he suffered on the final day of Crystal Palace's Premier League season.

Star striker Tim Cahill will skipper the side in his absence tonight.

Despite the "Bafana Bafana" outfit not taking this fixture seriously by sending an under-strength line-up, Postecoglou said he would not be relaxing for this game.

"I'm not a scientist, so I'm not into experimenting," he said.

"I know a lot of people have thrown that term around. Everything we do, we'll do for a purpose.

"We'll make the six substitutions, but a lot of that will be just around how players are coping with the game."

Postecoglou has grand visions for his side in Brazil even though it is ranked No.59 in the world.

"I look forward to the day when we're one of the favourites for the tournament. Maybe it won't happen under my tenure but that'll be the intent moving forward," he said.

Cahill echoed those thoughts ahead of tonight's game.

"My main focus will be that everyone knows their jobs. We're going in with a great intent to be professional and with a great attitude - on and off the park," he said.
