Playing in peace
BEST United made the trip from Brisbane to Warwick worthwhile by winning the Peace Festival football at Queens Park yesterday.
In the final, Best United scored in extra time to beat the Kumiyama team from Japan 1-0.
Best United is a team made up of players from southern Sudan.
The only injury on the day was an ankle injury to the Kumiyama captain which prevented him playing in the final.
Warwick missed the final despite Cameron Davey scoring in a 1-0 win against Kumiyama in the first game of the day.
In its second game, Warwick drew 2-all with Victoria Falls, a Zimbabwean team from Brisbane.
Warwick lost 3-0 to Daya Spirits in its final round robin game.
Daya Spirits are a Toowoomba-based team comprising players originally from East Africa.
Football joint co-ordinator Mark Cary rated the Peace Festival football a great success.
“All of the players and officials spoke highly of the success of the day,” Cary said.
“We would have had more teams except for a clash with Toowoomba football fixtures.
“There are only two full sized fields at Queens Park which limited the number of teams.
“We have been assured that there won't be a clash between the Peace Festival football and Toowoomba games in the next carnival in two years time.”
Cary said the sportsmanship between players on the day was excellent.
“It was incident free which makes it great for the referees to enjoy,” he said.
