Playmaker injury is body blow to Wattles
RUGBY LEAGUE: Matt Duggan is enduring a terrible run despite earning selection in the Central Division team.
On the surface it was a good weekend for Duggan as he was part of the Toowoomba squad that won the 47th Battalion Trophy at Yeppoon before being picked in the Central squad along with Dalby trio Corey Blades, Steve Franciscus and Jason Wardrop.
But it wasn't quite the great weekend it could have been.
Duggan carried a broken hand suffered in Wattles' Hutchinson Builders TRL Premiership match against Highfields into the 47th Battalion Trophy as the playmaker tried to play through the discomfort.
He played about 20 minutes in the Clydesdales' first game against Rockhampton but that was as long as he lasted.
"I just went up there and had a crack. It was pretty painful to be honest," Duggan said.
This injury follows on from Duggan missing all of last season due to a knee injury, which he aggravated early this season and only came back from against Highfields.
The two-time Price-Webcke Medal winner now has at least four weeks on the sidelines.
"Bad trot. It's unbelievable," Duggan said. "After being out for 12 months, I have had two injuries in three games."
The injury also means Wattles will be without their half and playmaker for more club footy. The one saving grace for Wattles is that they have a bye on May 20-21.
Central coach Eugene Seddon believes Duggan will be available to play for Central at the QRL Divisional Championships at the Gold Coast on June 3-4.
"Obviously he didn't finish the carnival but he's a quality player," Seddon said of Duggan's selection despite limited game time.
"I'm giving Matty the chance to prove himself."
Duggan is one of four Toowoomba players in the Central squad but it could easily be more after the Clydesdales reclaimed the 47th Battalion Trophy.
Beaten finalist Sunshine Coast has 10 players in the Central squad compared to Toowoomba's more modest representation.
"That was probably the disappointing part of the weekend. Sunny Coast got 10 blokes picked and we got four," Clydesdales coach Chris McEwan said.
"Guy like Dale Perkins were really outstanding, Alex Ambia and Jackson Green."
Seddon revealed Highfields half Jarrod Lee could come into the Central team should Duggan fail to recover from his hand injury in time.
