Plea for action on border highway

IT MAY just be a hop, skip and jump over the border, but the road to Woodenbong is a rocky one.

Woodenbong resident Julie Wadsworth said she made the trip to Killarney every day for work and was so frustrated with the state of Mt Lindesay Rd - which links the Southern Downs to the NSW Northern Rivers - she started a Facebook group to campaign for improvements.

"The community has put up with the dreadful conditions for years and has seen countless politicians, officials, meetings, committees, etc," Mrs Wadsworth said.

She said they were at a loss of what to do about the narrow roads, potholes, peeling bitumen and blind corners after years of being on the "government shuffle".

"We struggle to get a solution, only to be put back on the 'pass the buck' roundabout," Mrs Wadsworth said.

She said the state of the road had eaten away at the community's morale.

"All we hear is 'I don't know how you can live there and drive that road every day. I'll never go that way again, that has to be the worst road I have ever been on'," Mrs Wadsworth said.

"Our cars are worn out before they should be, we know our loved ones are at risk."

She said since work started on Cunningham's Gap, the traffic flow had increased, especially trucks.

"Many people have UHF radios and call up when driving, we'll say 'west bound on yellow gully corner' so others know you're coming.

"That's what it's come to."

Melanie Hardacre posted on Facebook after she spoke to a Warwick couple who had gone for a Sunday drive.

"They got 10km down the road from Legume to Woodenbong and had to turn back as the road was too rough for their medical conditions to handle," she said.

The Tenterfield Shire Council and NSW Transport had not responded by the time we went to print.
