Plenty at stake in the BRL as finals near this weekend

RUGBY LEAGUE: Both Inglewood Roosters and Tenterfield Tigers will be looking to become the second most successful club in Border Rugby League history when they meet in the grand final on Sunday at Inglewood.

Texas has won eight BRL premierships in men's A-grade; Inglewood, Tenterfield and Stanthorpe three each and Killarney two. Sunday's grand final will be the 20th since the league was formed.

Inglewood scored a 34-26 victory against Tenterfield in the major semi final 11 days ago while Tenterfield ran away with the preliminary final against Stanthorpe/Texas.

Tenterfield last won the premiership in men's A-grade in 2007 while Inglewood won in 2012 and lost the grand final in 2013 before a two-year break.

The grand finals are being played on a Sunday for the first time to avoid a clash with the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League grand finals at Inglewood on Saturday.

In the 12.30pm Sunday game, Tenterfield will be aiming to keep an three-year unbeaten record when they play Wallangarra in the women's leaguetag grand final.

The A-grade men's game will kick-off at 2pm.

In the preliminary final on Saturday at Tenterfield, the home side scored a 72-4 victory against Stanthorpe/Texas.

Tenterfield kept Stanthorpe/Texas scoreless until the second half.

Tigers president Brendan Minns rated second- rowers Murray Johnson and Ben Hickey as two of the best.

"Jarrod McIntosh was the leading try scorer,” Minns said.

Prop Kyle Marsh had a strong game for the losing side.

Inglewood had last weekend off and will host a grand final for the first time since 2013.

Brent Osborne is captain-coach after playing for the Cowboys last season.

The premiership trophies will be presented on Sunday but all individual trophies, including the Southern Downs Weekly BRL Player of the Year, will be presented at the 20th anniversary dinner on September 17.
