Plethora of plankers hits region
TIDDALIK, the Southern Downs Regional Council building sign and the Cowboys Football Club.
What do these prominent Warwick spots have in common?
They have all been chosen as prime planking positions by enthusiastic members of the Warwick Planking Association — a newly created Facebook group that is leaving its mark over local icons.
The page has acquired 48 followers since being created earlier this week and it seems no Warwick spot is off-limits for a possible planking point.
“I’ve got such a busy week of planking ahead! Sooo busy”, one of the Warwick Planking Association members wrote.
Another member who clearly shares the planking passion replied, “Yeah there are so many places that need planking. I really want some one to plank on the Mayor’s desk”.
The planking craze has erupted to massive proportions over the past couple of weeks, despite the death of a 20-year-old Brisbane man while attempting to plank on a seventh storey balcony.
Planking involves people lying face down on an object, mimicking the appearance of a board. And while the fad may seem light-hearted fun, plankers are this week being exposed to the dangers the activity presents.
A Clifton High School student was suspended on Monday this week for joining in the planking craze, the same day three Warwick State High School students were suspended for the same thing.
One of the three suspended Warwick High School students has had a Facebook page dedicated to him, claiming he was the first person to be suspended for planking.
He quickly amassed a bevy of followers, which last night had climbed to 315 friends — one of which was his mother.
Although most of the comments on his page were positive and friends came to profess their love for their newfound “hero”, some took to the site to demean the craze sweeping the nation.
“How dump (sic) can u get. (student’s name) seriously u think of wat could of happened ur a d------- planking at that hight really mature”, was a comment from one of the planker’s “friends”.
One girl ridiculed the name of the Facebook page, stating “The next group will be (student’s name,) The person who actually died over planking”.
And it seems planking is not only a danger to your health but also your job.
Yesterday news broke of eight Woolworths employees being fired for planking on items in the workplace, including meat grinders, display shelves, trolleys and milk crates and the company said it is investigating other planking incidents.
