PM announces new National Children's Commissioner
SOCIAL services groups have applauded the choice of New South Wales Commissioner for Children Megan Mitchell as the new National Children's Commissioner.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced Ms Mitchell would begin her duties in March.
Ms Mitchell will be in charge of examining Federal Government policies and new laws, in relation to how they affect the rights of Australia's minors.
She will also lead the National Human Rights Commission in promoting public discussion of children's rights issues, conduct research and education programs and consult with children's representative organisation.
Ms Gillard said the commissioner's focus would be on society's most vulnerable children, including those with a disability, indigenous children, homeless children or those subjected to violence.
Legislation to create the new commissioner's role was passed by parliament last year.
