Police call lighting a fire now as absolute stupidity

POLICE have described the actions of a man burning off on Saturday afternoon in Greinke Lane, Fletcher, as "absolute stupidity and showing a lack of common sense”.

Wallangarra police officer in charge Sergeant Alan Baker was informed that a resident at Fletcher, between Ballandean and Stanthorpe, was burning off grass at 1.35pm Saturday.

"The man from Toowoomba has a holiday home at Fletcher which he comes to spasmodically,” Sgt Baker said.

"He claimed to be unaware of the total fire ban.

"He was cautioned and will be charged if it happens again.”

No only did the man require a fire permit to burn, he would not have been given one during a total fire ban.

The QFES also attended to speak to the man about the danger of the fire.

The grass fire was 3m by 3m before being put out and was close to a steep woody hill with long grass and undergrowth.

Sgt Baker said it was "absolute stupidity and showing a lack of common sense to be burning off in the middle of the day in the present parched conditions”.
