Police car crashes into civilian car while chasing stolen ute

A POLICE car has crashed into a civilian vehicle while attempting to chase a stolen utility.

About 2.20pm on Saturday a female police officer driving a Rapid Action Patrol Group car spotted a stolen Ford utility on Thuringowa Dr near Charles St.

Acting Inspector Graeme Patterson said the officer "reversed the car to manoeuvrer away from the lights and in process has reversed into another vehicle".

Insp Patterson said there was only minor damage but the pursuit was terminated immediately.

A witness told The Townsville Bulletin the car had turned right at the lights into Charles St before slamming on the brakes half way through the intersection, switching on emergency lights and then reversing into the other vehicle.

The incident will now be reviewed by a senior police officer.
